Your phone holds years of memories. If it's lost, stolen or broken, photos that aren't backed up may be gone forever.

Setting up automatic backup takes a few minutes and runs quietly in the background.

Option 1: Cloud backup

Cloud services upload your photos automatically and let you see them on any device.

  • iPhone: Settings → your name → iCloud → Photos, then turn on iCloud Photos.
  • Android: open Google Photos, tap your profile picture, then turn on Backup.

Free storage is limited, so you may need a paid plan if you have a large library.

Option 2: Computer backup

Connect your phone to a computer with a cable and copy your photos into a folder. This is free, but you have to remember to do it regularly.

Option 3: External drive

Copy photos from your computer onto an external hard drive or USB stick. It's a great second backup for important memories.

Follow the 3-2-1 rule

For the most important photos, aim for:

  • 3 copies of your photos
  • on 2 different types of storage
  • with 1 copy stored away from home, such as in the cloud

Keep your library tidy

Delete duplicates, blurry shots and screenshots regularly. A smaller library backs up faster and is easier to enjoy.

Set it up today — you'll be glad you did if your phone ever goes missing.
