Taking decorations down is less fun than putting them up, but a little care now saves time, money and broken ornaments next year.

Before you pack

  • Throw away broken items and lights that don't work.
  • Donate decorations you no longer use.
  • Make a note of anything you need to replace.

Lights

Wrap each string around a piece of stiff card, a coat hanger or an empty paper towel tube. Label each one with its location, like "tree" or "window".

Ornaments

  • Use egg cartons or cupcake liners for small baubles.
  • Wrap fragile ornaments in tissue paper.
  • Use divided storage boxes for larger collections.
Label everythingClear plastic boxes with labels on the side make it easy to find what you need next year.

Wreaths and garlands

Hang wreaths in a bag or store them in a round wreath box. Coil garlands loosely to avoid crushing.

Where to store

Choose a cool, dry place. Avoid damp basements and very hot lofts, which can damage candles, fabrics and electronics.

Pack a "first box"

Put the things you'll need first — tree stand, tree lights, topper and extension leads — in one clearly marked box.
