Riding a bike is a joyful milestone. Many families find that learning balance first helps children ride sooner and with more confidence.

Safety first

  • A properly fitted helmet
  • A bike the right size: feet can touch the ground when seated
  • A safe, flat, open space away from traffic

Step 1: Balance

Use a balance bike, or remove the pedals from a small bike and lower the seat. Let your child scoot and glide with their feet.

Step 2: Gliding

Encourage longer glides with feet up. Gentle slopes on grass can help.

Step 3: Add pedals

  1. Put the pedals back on.
  2. Start with one pedal at the "2 o'clock" position.
  3. Push off and pedal while looking ahead.
  4. Hold their shoulders or back of the seat lightly at first, not the handlebars.
Look aheadRemind kids to look where they want to go, not at their feet.

Braking and turning

Practise stopping and gentle turns before riding anywhere busier.

Keep sessions short and fun. Every child learns at their own pace.
