Computers can fail, be stolen or get infected. A backup means you won't lose your photos, documents and work.

The 3-2-1 rule

  • 3 copies of important files
  • on 2 different types of storage
  • with 1 copy off-site, like the cloud

Windows

  • Cloud: use OneDrive or another service to sync Documents, Pictures and Desktop.
  • External drive: use File History or the built-in backup tool to copy files automatically.

Mac

  • Time Machine: connect an external drive and turn on Time Machine in System Settings for automatic backups.
  • iCloud Drive: sync Desktop and Documents folders.
Test your backupTry restoring a file now and then to make sure your backup actually works.

How often?

Automatic backups are best. If you back up manually, do it at least weekly, and before major updates or trips.

Protect against ransomware

Keep at least one backup that isn't always connected to your computer, such as an external drive you unplug after backing up.
