A weekend city break is a great way to explore somewhere new without taking much time off. With smart planning, it doesn't have to cost a lot.

Choose the right city

  • Look for cities with cheap direct flights or train connections.
  • Off-season travel (outside summer and holidays) is usually cheaper.
  • Compact, walkable cities save on transport.

Save on getting there

  1. Travel hand luggage only.
  2. Fly or travel early on Saturday and back late on Sunday.
  3. Use public transport from the airport, not taxis.

Save on accommodation

  • Compare hotels, guesthouses and apartments.
  • Stay near a metro or bus line rather than the very centre.
  • Check if breakfast is included.
City cardsMany cities offer tourist cards with free public transport and discounted attractions. Do the maths to see if one saves you money.

Free and cheap things to do

  • Walking tours (tip-based)
  • Parks, markets and viewpoints
  • Free museum days
  • Street food instead of restaurants

Plan, but not too much

Pick two or three must-sees and leave time to wander. Some of the best moments happen when you explore without a plan.
