The biggest challenge of Christmas dinner isn't any one dish — it's getting everything ready at the same time. A timeline makes it manageable.

One week before

  • Finalise the menu and guest numbers.
  • Order your meat and do the big food shop.
  • Check you have enough oven dishes, foil and serving plates.

2–3 days before

  • Start thawing a frozen turkey in the fridge if needed.
  • Make cranberry sauce and gravy base.
  • Prepare desserts that keep.

The day before

  • Peel and chop vegetables; store in water or containers.
  • Make stuffing.
  • Set the table.
Work backwardsWrite down when you want to eat, then count back each dish's cooking and resting time.

Christmas Day (eating at 2 pm example)

  1. Morning: take the meat out of the fridge and preheat the oven.
  2. Late morning: roast the meat according to its weight; check it with a thermometer.
  3. 1:00 pm: potatoes in the oven.
  4. 1:15 pm: meat out to rest under foil.
  5. 1:30 pm: other vegetables and stuffing in; heat gravy.
  6. 1:50 pm: carve and warm plates.
  7. 2:00 pm: serve.

Accept help, keep a list on the fridge, and remember: a relaxed host matters more than a perfect meal.
