Splattered sauce and dried-on food make microwaves look grim. Steam loosens everything so you can wipe it clean in minutes.

What you need

  • A microwave-safe bowl
  • Water
  • A lemon or a few tablespoons of white vinegar
  • A cloth or sponge

Step by step

  1. Fill the bowl with about 250 ml (1 cup) of water.
  2. Add sliced lemon or vinegar.
  3. Microwave on high for 3–5 minutes, until the window steams up.
  4. Leave the door closed for 2–3 minutes.
  5. Carefully remove the bowl — it will be hot.
  6. Wipe the inside, starting at the top.
  7. Remove and wash the turntable in soapy water.
SafetyPut a wooden spoon or chopstick in the bowl to help prevent water from boiling over suddenly.
