Holiday guests remember how welcome they felt. A few thoughtful touches make a big difference, even if you don't have a dedicated guest room.

The essentials

  • Fresh, clean bedding and an extra blanket
  • Two pillows per person, ideally one firm and one soft
  • Clean towels set out on the bed
  • Somewhere to put a suitcase
  • A few empty hangers and drawer space

Thoughtful extras

  • Wi-Fi password on a card
  • A phone charger and extension lead
  • A small basket of travel toiletries and a spare toothbrush
  • Bottled water and a glass
  • A reading lamp
  • A few snacks
Test it yourselfSleep in the guest bed for one night. You'll quickly notice a draught, a lumpy pillow or a too-bright streetlight.

No spare room?

  • A good air mattress or sofa bed
  • A folding screen or curtain for privacy
  • A clear corner for their bag
