Energy use rises in winter with heating, lighting and more time at home. Small habits across the house add up to real savings.

Heating

  • Lower the thermostat by a degree.
  • Heat the rooms you use and close doors to unused rooms.
  • Use a timer or smart thermostat.
  • Stop draughts around doors and windows.

Kitchen

  • Use lids on pans and match pan size to the hob.
  • Batch cook to use the oven once for several meals.
  • Use a microwave, slow cooker or air fryer for small portions — they often use less energy than a full oven.
  • Only boil the water you need in the kettle.

Laundry

  • Wash at 30°C where possible.
  • Run full loads.
  • Air-dry when you can.
Standby checkSwitch off TVs, games consoles and chargers at the wall when not in use.

Lighting

Switch to LED bulbs and turn off lights in empty rooms.

Track it

If you have a smart meter or energy app, check it weekly to see which changes make the biggest difference.
