The right order for lights, garland and ornaments for a full, magazine-worthy tree.

A beautifully decorated tree is the heart of holiday decor. The secret is decorating in the right order, so each layer builds on the last.

1. Prepare the tree

For a real tree, cut a little off the trunk and give it plenty of water. For an artificial tree, fluff out every branch — this step makes the biggest difference.

2. Lights first

  • Plan for roughly 100 lights for every foot (30 cm) of tree height for a full look.
  • Weave lights from the trunk outwards along each branch, not just around the outside.
  • Test lights before putting them on.

3. Garland or ribbon

Drape garland in loose swags, or tuck ribbon in and out of branches in a diagonal line from top to bottom.

4. Ornaments

  1. Hang the largest ornaments first, spaced evenly.
  2. Fill in with medium ornaments.
  3. Add small ornaments in gaps, including some deeper inside the tree for depth.
Pro tipChoose a simple colour scheme of two or three colours. It looks more polished than mixing everything.

5. Topper and skirt

Add the star or angel, then finish with a tree skirt or basket at the base.

Safety

Keep real trees watered and away from heaters and candles. Turn off tree lights when you go to bed or leave the house.
