Snow and ice make roads slippery and stopping distances much longer. The safest choice is often not to travel. If you must drive, these tips help.

Before you set off

  • Clear all snow and ice from windows, mirrors, lights and the roof.
  • Check the weather and road conditions.
  • Make sure you have plenty of fuel or charge.
  • Tell someone your route and expected arrival time.

On the road

  1. Slow down. Stopping distances on icy roads can be many times longer than normal.
  2. Leave a big gap to the vehicle in front.
  3. Be gentle with steering, braking and accelerating.
  4. Use a higher gear to pull away in snow to reduce wheelspin.
  5. Brake before bends, not during them.
If you skidEase off the accelerator and steer gently in the direction you want to go. Avoid slamming the brakes.
