A dripping tap can waste a surprising amount of water. Often the fix is a cheap replacement washer or cartridge.

Before you start

  1. Turn off the water supply under the sink (or at the main stop tap).
  2. Open the tap to drain remaining water.
  3. Put the plug in the sink so small parts can't fall down the drain.

Identify your tap

  • Traditional taps with a rubber washer usually turn several times.
  • Quarter-turn taps use ceramic discs.
  • Mixer taps with one lever often use a cartridge.

Replace the washer or cartridge

  1. Remove the decorative cap and handle.
  2. Unscrew the headgear or cartridge with a spanner.
  3. Take the old washer or cartridge to a hardware shop to match.
  4. Fit the new part and reassemble.
  5. Turn the water back on slowly and check for drips.
Take photosPhotograph each step as you take the tap apart. It makes putting it back together much easier.

When to call a plumber

If the tap still drips, the valve seat may be damaged, or you can't loosen parts safely. A plumber can help.
