A squeaky door is a small problem that gets annoying fast. The cause is almost always dry or dirty hinges, and the fix takes minutes.

Quick fix: lubricate the hinges

  1. Close the door.
  2. Tap the hinge pin up from below with a screwdriver and hammer, lifting it partway out.
  3. Wipe the pin clean.
  4. Apply a lubricant, such as a silicone spray or light machine oil.
  5. Push the pin back in and open and close the door several times.
  6. Wipe away any drips.
Do one hinge at a timeRemoving one pin at a time keeps the door safely in place.

No lubricant?

A little petroleum jelly or a rub of a wax candle on the hinge pin can work as a temporary fix.

Still squeaking?

  • Check for loose hinge screws and tighten them.
  • Look for a door rubbing on the frame or floor.
  • Clean rusty pins with fine sandpaper or steel wool before lubricating.

Avoid

Cooking oils can go sticky and attract dust over time. Use a proper lubricant for long-lasting results.
