A fridge that's not cooling properly is stressful, especially when it's full of food. Before you call for a repair, run through these simple checks.

8 things to check

  1. Power: is it plugged in and is the light on? Check the fuse or circuit breaker.
  2. Thermostat setting: it may have been knocked. Most fridges should be around 3–5°C (37–40°F).
  3. Door seals: close the door on a sheet of paper. If it slides out easily, the seal may be worn.
  4. Overpacking: crowded shelves block cold air from circulating.
  5. Blocked vents: make sure food isn't pushed against the vents inside.
  6. Dirty coils: vacuum the condenser coils at the back or underneath.
  7. Space around the fridge: it needs a gap for air to flow, away from ovens and direct sun.
  8. Frost build-up: thick ice in the freezer can block airflow. Defrost if needed.
Keep food safeKeep the door closed as much as possible. A full, closed fridge stays cold for several hours without power.

When to call a professional

If the fridge is silent, makes loud clicking or buzzing sounds, or still isn't cold after 24 hours with these fixes, the compressor or a fan may need repair.

Is food still safe?

If perishable food has been above 5°C (about 40°F) for more than about two hours, it's safest to throw it away.
