A smelly fridge makes everything inside seem less appetising. Usually the cause is spilled liquid, forgotten leftovers or food stored without a lid.

Masking the smell won't help for long. Find the source, clean, then keep odours away.

Step 1: Find the culprit

Take everything out and check dates. Look for old leftovers, soft vegetables at the bottom of the drawer, and leaks from meat packaging. Throw out anything past its best.

Step 2: Clean every surface

  1. Turn the fridge off or set it to the warmest setting while you work.
  2. Remove shelves and drawers and wash them in warm, soapy water.
  3. Wipe the inside with a mix of warm water and baking soda (about 1 tablespoon per litre).
  4. Don't forget the door seals, where crumbs and spills collect.
  5. Dry everything well before putting it back.
Hidden sourceMany fridges have a drip tray underneath or a drain hole at the back. If the smell returns, check and clean these too.

Step 3: Absorb leftover odours

  • Leave an open box of baking soda on a shelf and replace it every three months.
  • Ground coffee or activated charcoal in a small bowl also absorbs odours.

Keep it fresh

  • Store leftovers in containers with lids.
  • Wrap strong foods like cheese, onions and fish well.
  • Do a quick clear-out once a week before you shop.
  • Wipe up spills straight away.

If your fridge still smells after a deep clean, check it's cold enough — it should be 5°C (about 40°F) or below. A fridge that isn't cooling properly lets food spoil faster.
