A frozen turkey needs much longer to thaw than most people expect. Planning ahead is the key to a safe and stress-free holiday meal.

Method 1: In the fridge (safest)

Allow about 24 hours for every 4–5 lb (around 2 kg) of turkey. Keep it in its wrapping on a tray on the bottom shelf.

Turkey size Fridge thawing time
8–12 lb 2–3 days
12–16 lb 3–4 days
16–20 lb 4–5 days
20–24 lb 5–6 days

Method 2: Cold water (faster)

  1. Keep the turkey in a leak-proof bag.
  2. Submerge it in cold tap water.
  3. Change the water every 30 minutes.
  4. Allow about 30 minutes per pound.
  5. Cook it straight away once thawed.
NeverDon't thaw a turkey on the counter or in hot water. The outside can reach unsafe temperatures while the inside is still frozen.

Still frozen on the day?

You can cook a turkey from frozen, but it takes about 50% longer. Use a thermometer and make sure the thickest parts reach 165°F (74°C).

How long does a thawed turkey keep?

A fully thawed turkey can stay in the fridge for 1–2 days before cooking.

Mark your thawing start date on the calendar now, and the big day will go smoothly.
