Asking for more money feels uncomfortable for most people. But a calm, well-prepared conversation is a normal part of working life — and many managers expect it.

Step 1: Know your market value

Look up salary ranges for your role, experience and location using job adverts and salary comparison sites. This gives you a realistic number to aim for.

Step 2: Build your case

Write down what you've achieved, using numbers where you can:

  • Projects you completed or led
  • Money you saved or earned for the company
  • New responsibilities you've taken on
  • Positive feedback from colleagues or customers

Step 3: Pick the right time

Good moments include after a big success, during performance reviews, or before budgets are set for the next year. Avoid busy or stressful days for your manager.

Pro tipAsk for a meeting in advance so your manager has time to prepare — don't spring it on them in passing.

Step 4: Use a simple script

"Thanks for meeting with me. Over the past year I've taken on [responsibility] and delivered [result]. Based on my research, the market rate for this role is around [range]. I'd like to discuss adjusting my salary to [number]."

Step 5: Handle the answer

  • If yes: thank them and ask for confirmation in writing.
  • If not now: ask what you'd need to achieve and agree a time to review it.
  • If money is tight: ask about other benefits, such as training, flexible hours or extra holiday.

Stay positive and professional, whatever the result. You've shown your value — and opened the door for the next conversation.
