Promotions don't always happen automatically. Clearly asking — with a strong case — often makes the difference.

Build your case

  • List results and responsibilities beyond your current role.
  • Show how your work helped the team or company.
  • Gather positive feedback from colleagues and clients.
  • Understand what the next role requires.

Choose the right time

Good moments include performance reviews, after a major success, or when a team is growing. Avoid very stressful periods.

The conversation

  1. Ask for a dedicated meeting.
  2. Explain your achievements and how you're already working at the next level.
  3. Ask directly: "I'd like to be considered for a promotion to [role]."
  4. Ask what you'd need to show if it's not possible now.
Agree next stepsIf the answer is "not yet", agree specific goals and a timeline to review progress.

Follow up

Summarise the conversation in an email and track your progress against the agreed goals.
