Washing machines clean your clothes, but they need cleaning too. Detergent residue, lint and damp create a musty smell that can transfer to your laundry.

Front-loader cleaning

  1. Clean the rubber seal: wipe inside the folds with warm soapy water or a diluted cleaner. Remove any hair and lint.
  2. Clean the detergent drawer: pull it out and scrub with an old toothbrush.
  3. Run a hot empty cycle (60–90°C) with a washing machine cleaner or a cup of white vinegar or 2–3 tablespoons of baking soda (not both together).
  4. Clean the filter: place a towel and tray underneath, open the small hatch at the front bottom and remove lint and coins.
  5. Wipe the outside and door glass.
Check your manualAlways follow your machine's instructions for filter cleaning and recommended cleaning products.

Top-loader cleaning

Run a hot cycle with cleaner, pause it after it fills to let it soak for an hour, then complete the cycle. Scrub the lid and rim.

Prevent smells

  • Leave the door and drawer open after washing to dry.
  • Remove wet laundry promptly.
  • Use the right amount of detergent — too much leaves residue.
  • Run a hot wash occasionally.

Clean your machine about once a month, and your clothes will smell fresher.
