Mulled wine is the smell of winter markets and holiday parties. It's simple to make at home and fills the house with a cosy aroma.

Ingredients (6 glasses)

  • 1 bottle (750 ml) red wine
  • 1 orange, sliced
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 4 cloves
  • 2 star anise
  • 3–4 tablespoons sugar or honey

Method

  1. Add everything to a large pan.
  2. Heat gently over low heat for 15–20 minutes.
  3. Don't let it boil — this burns off the alcohol and makes it bitter.
  4. Taste and add more sweetener if needed.
  5. Ladle into heatproof glasses, avoiding the whole spices.
Keep it warmA slow cooker on the low or warm setting keeps mulled wine at the perfect temperature for a party.

Alcohol-free version

Replace the wine with red grape juice, cranberry juice or apple juice. Use less sugar, as juice is already sweet. Kids and non-drinkers can enjoy the same festive flavours.

Easy variations

  • Add a splash of brandy for a stronger version.
  • Use white wine with apple slices and vanilla for a lighter drink.

Please drink responsibly, and never drink and drive. Offer the alcohol-free option to guests too.
