How to Pack for a Winter Trip (Stay Warm, Pack Light)

Bulky coats and boots take up space. The layering system that keeps you warm without overpacking.

Winter clothes are bulky, which makes packing tricky. The secret is layering: several thin layers are warmer and more flexible than one thick item.

The layering system

  1. Base layer: thermal tops and leggings (merino wool or synthetic, not cotton).
  2. Middle layer: fleece or a light down jacket.
  3. Outer layer: a warm, waterproof coat.

Winter packing checklist (5–7 days)

  • 2–3 thermal base layers
  • 3–4 tops or sweaters
  • 2 pairs of trousers or jeans
  • 1 warm coat (wear it on the plane)
  • 1 pair of waterproof boots (wear them too)
  • Warm socks for each day
  • Hat, gloves and scarf
  • Lip balm and moisturiser
Save spaceWear your bulkiest items while travelling and use compression bags for sweaters.

Extra essentials

  • Hand warmers
  • A small umbrella
  • A power bank — batteries drain faster in the cold
  • Sunglasses for snowy places

Check the forecast

Look at the weather for your destination a few days before you leave, and adjust your packing. Cities and mountains can be very different.
