Not every gift is a perfect fit. Returning or exchanging items is usually straightforward if you know the rules and act quickly.

Check the return policy

  • Many shops offer extended holiday return windows for purchases made in November and December.
  • Policies vary for sale items, electronics and personal items.
  • Some shops offer exchanges or store credit rather than refunds without a receipt.

Gift receipts

A gift receipt shows the item but not the price. It usually lets the recipient exchange the item or get store credit. When buying gifts, ask for one at checkout.

For giversKeep receipts and order confirmations in one folder or email label until after the holidays.

Step-by-step return

  1. Keep the item unused with tags and original packaging.
  2. Find the receipt or order number.
  3. Check if returns are in store, by post or both.
  4. For online returns, print the label and keep proof of postage.
  5. Check your account until the refund arrives.

Your rights

Many countries give extra rights for faulty items and for online purchases, which can be separate from a shop's own policy. Check consumer guidance where you live.

If you can't return a gift, consider regifting, selling or donating it.
