A blocked toilet is stressful, especially with guests in the house. Most blockages can be cleared quickly at home.

First: stop the overflow

If the water is rising, don't flush again. Take the lid off the tank and push the flapper down, or turn off the water valve behind the toilet.

Method 1: Plunger

  1. Use a flange plunger (with an extended rubber flap) for the best seal.
  2. Make sure there's enough water to cover the plunger cup.
  3. Push down gently first, then plunge firmly up and down 10–15 times.
  4. Repeat until the water drains.

Method 2: Hot water and dish soap

  1. Squirt a generous amount of dish soap into the bowl.
  2. Pour in a bucket of hot (not boiling) water from waist height.
  3. Wait 15–20 minutes, then try flushing.
Never use boiling waterIt can crack the porcelain.

Method 3: Toilet auger

A toilet auger (snake) reaches deeper blockages without scratching the bowl.

Prevent blockages

  • Only flush toilet paper — no wipes, cotton buds or sanitary products.
  • Use less paper per flush if needed.

If water backs up in other drains, or nothing works, call a plumber.
