A good cover letter explains why you're interested in a role and why you're a strong fit. Keep it short, specific and focused on the employer's needs.

A simple structure

  1. Opening: the role you're applying for and a strong reason you're interested.
  2. Middle: two or three examples of relevant achievements.
  3. Closing: thank them and say you'd welcome an interview.

Example opening

"I'm excited to apply for the Marketing Assistant role at [Company]. I've followed your recent campaigns and would love to bring my experience in social media content to your team."

Show, don't tell

  • Weak: "I'm a hard worker."
  • Strong: "I reduced customer response times by 30% by creating a new email system."
Tailor itMention the company name and match your examples to the main requirements in the job advert.

Keep it clean

  • Aim for about half a page to one page.
  • Use the hiring manager's name if you can find it.
  • Check spelling and grammar carefully.
  • Save as a PDF with a clear file name.

Final check

Read it out loud. If it sounds natural and confident, and clearly answers "why you, why here", it's ready to send.
