Outdoor lights make homes look magical in winter. But electricity and wet weather need care. Follow these tips to decorate safely.

Use the right lights

  • Choose lights labelled for outdoor use.
  • Check for safety certification marks.
  • Prefer LED lights — they run cooler and use much less energy.

Check before you hang

  1. Inspect wires for cracks, fraying or damaged bulbs.
  2. Throw away damaged sets rather than repairing them.
  3. Test lights on the ground before climbing up.

Power safely

  • Use outdoor-rated extension leads and sockets protected by an RCD/GFCI.
  • Don't overload sockets or daisy-chain too many sets.
  • Keep plugs and connections off the ground and away from puddles.
  • Use a timer so lights aren't left on all night.
Ladder safetyUse a stable ladder on level ground, and have someone hold it. Never stretch too far to reach.

Hanging lights

Use plastic clips designed for lights rather than nails or staples, which can damage wires. Keep lights away from power lines.

After the holidays

Take lights down carefully and wrap them around a piece of card to avoid tangles next year.
