Travelling with only a carry-on feels like a superpower. No baggage fees, no waiting at the carousel, no lost luggage — just walk off the plane and go.

A full week of clothes really does fit in one small bag. The trick is not squeezing harder, it is choosing smarter. Here is the exact system.

Check your airline's rules first

Carry-on size and weight limits change between airlines, and budget airlines are often stricter. Look up your exact ticket before you pack, especially in Europe where some fares only include a small under-seat bag.

Pick a simple colour palette

Choose two or three colours that all go together, like navy, white and grey. When every top matches every bottom, a few items create many outfits.

The 7-day carry-on checklist

  • Tops: 4–5 (mix of t-shirts and one smarter shirt)
  • Bottoms: 2–3 (one pair of jeans or trousers, plus shorts or a skirt depending on weather)
  • Layer: 1 light jacket or sweater
  • Underwear and socks: 5–7 pairs (or fewer if you will rinse a few)
  • Shoes: 2 pairs maximum — wear the bulkier pair on the plane
  • Sleepwear: 1 set
  • Toiletries: travel sizes in a clear bag
  • Tech: phone charger, travel adapter, power bank
  • Documents: passport or ID, bookings, cards, some local cash
Pro tipWear your heaviest items — jacket, jeans and trainers — on the plane. They take up the most space in a bag.

Roll, fold, or use cubes?

Rolling soft items like t-shirts saves space and reduces creases. Fold stiffer items like shirts and trousers flat. Packing cubes keep everything organised and compress clothes, which makes it easy to find things without unpacking the whole bag.

Fill every gap: socks go inside shoes, chargers slide into side pockets, and small items tuck into corners.

Liquids and security

Many airports limit liquids in hand luggage to small containers in one clear, resealable bag, though some airports with newer scanners have relaxed the rules. Check the rules for every airport on your trip, including the flight home.

Solid toiletries — shampoo bars, solid deodorant and toothpaste tablets — skip the liquid rules completely and save space.

Plan for laundry

For trips longer than a week, plan one quick wash. A small travel wash or a hotel laundry service lets you pack for four days and travel for ten.

Leave a little room in your bag, too. You will almost always bring something home that you did not leave with.
