When you owe money on several cards or loans, it can be hard to know where to start. Two popular methods give you a clear plan: the snowball and the avalanche.

Both work the same basic way: pay the minimum on every debt, then put any extra money towards one debt at a time.

The snowball method

Focus on the smallest balance first, regardless of interest rate.

  1. List your debts from smallest to largest balance.
  2. Pay the minimum on all of them.
  3. Put every extra pound, dollar or euro towards the smallest one.
  4. When it's paid off, roll that payment into the next smallest.

Why it works: quick wins keep you motivated.

The avalanche method

Focus on the debt with the highest interest rate first.

  1. List your debts from highest to lowest interest rate.
  2. Pay the minimum on all of them.
  3. Put all extra money towards the highest-interest debt.
  4. When it's gone, move to the next highest.

Why it works: you pay less interest overall and usually finish sooner.

Speed it up

  • Build a small emergency fund so surprises don't add new debt.
  • Ask lenders about lower rates or balance transfer options.
