Many pets carry extra weight, especially after holiday treats. A healthy weight helps protect joints, energy and long-term health.

The rib check

Run your hands along your pet's sides. You should be able to feel the ribs easily under a thin layer of fat, without pressing hard.

The waist check

Look from above. A healthy dog or cat usually has a visible waist behind the ribs.

The side view

From the side, the belly should tuck up slightly rather than hang down.

Body condition scoreAsk your vet to show you your pet's body condition score. It's more useful than weight alone.

Keeping weight healthy

  • Measure food portions instead of guessing.
  • Count treats as part of daily food.
  • Avoid table scraps.
  • Increase play and walks.

Talk to your vet

Before changing your pet's diet, ask your vet for advice. Sudden weight changes can be a sign of health problems and should always be checked.
