European Christmas markets are one of the most magical winter experiences: twinkling lights, wooden stalls, warm drinks and handmade gifts. A little planning helps you make the most of it.

When to go

Most markets open in late November and run until around Christmas, with some continuing into early January. Check the exact dates for each city, as they change every year.

Popular destinations

Germany, Austria, France, the Czech Republic and Hungary are famous for their markets. Many smaller towns have beautiful, less crowded markets too.

Planning tips

  1. Book early — hotels near popular markets fill up fast.
  2. Visit on weekdays to avoid crowds.
  3. Go at dusk to see the lights come on.
  4. Combine cities by train to see several markets in one trip.
Bring cashMany market stalls prefer cash, and some charge a deposit for mugs that you get back when you return them.

What to pack

  • Warm layers, hat, gloves and waterproof boots
  • A tote bag for gifts
  • A power bank for photos in the cold

Stay safe

Markets are busy, so keep valuables secure and watch for pickpockets. Agree on a meeting point if you get separated.
