When water freezes, it expands — and that can split pipes. A burst pipe can flood a home in minutes. A few simple precautions help prevent it.

Before cold weather

  • Insulate pipes in lofts, garages, basements and outside walls with foam lagging.
  • Disconnect and drain garden hoses.
  • Fix dripping taps.
  • Know where your main water stop tap is and check it turns.

During freezing weather

  1. Keep the heating on low, even when you're away.
  2. Open cupboard doors under sinks to let warm air reach pipes.
  3. On very cold nights, let a tap drip slightly to keep water moving.
  4. Keep garage doors closed if there are water pipes inside.
Going away?Leave the heating on a low setting, or ask a neighbour to check on your home during a cold spell.

If a pipe freezes

  1. Turn off the water at the main stop tap.
  2. Open the tap fed by that pipe.
  3. Thaw slowly with a hairdryer on low, warm towels or a hot water bottle.
  4. Never use a naked flame or blowtorch.

If a pipe bursts

Turn off the water at the stop tap immediately, switch off electrics if water is near them, and call a plumber. Take photos for your insurance.
