How to Remove Candle Wax From Fabric and Surfaces

Wax dripped on the tablecloth or carpet? Freeze it, scrape it and lift it with an iron.

Candles make the holidays cosy, but wax drips happen. The good news: wax is easy to remove once you know the trick.

Step 1: Let it harden

Don't wipe warm wax — it spreads. Let it cool, or speed it up with an ice cube in a bag.

Step 2: Scrape off the excess

Gently lift hardened wax with a blunt knife or old card.

Step 3: Iron method (fabric and carpet)

  1. Place a brown paper bag or paper towel over the wax.
  2. Press with a warm iron (no steam) for a few seconds.
  3. The wax melts into the paper. Move to a clean area of paper and repeat.
Small itemsPut tablecloths or napkins in the freezer for an hour. The wax becomes brittle and flakes off easily.

Hard surfaces

For wood, glass and metal, gently warm the wax with a hairdryer and wipe it away with a soft cloth.

Coloured wax stains

If dye remains, treat with a stain remover and wash as usual. Test on a hidden area first.

Prevent drips

Use drip-free candles or LED candles, and keep candles away from draughts.
