Buffering videos and dropped video calls are frustrating. Often the problem isn't your internet plan but how your Wi-Fi is set up at home.

Quick fixes

  1. Restart your router. Unplug it for 30 seconds, then plug it back in. It clears glitches and often helps straight away.
  2. Run a speed test near the router and then in the room where it's slow. This shows whether the problem is your connection or the signal around your home.
  3. Disconnect devices you're not using. Many devices updating at once can slow everything down.

Improve your router's position

  1. Place it centrally in your home, not tucked in a corner.
  2. Raise it up on a shelf rather than on the floor.
  3. Keep it away from thick walls, mirrors, fish tanks and microwaves.
Pro tipDon't hide your router inside a cupboard or behind the TV. It may look tidier, but it blocks the signal.

Change a few settings

  1. Use the 5 GHz band when you're close to the router — it's faster. The 2.4 GHz band reaches further but is slower.
  2. Update your router's firmware through its app or settings page.
  3. Use a strong Wi-Fi password so neighbours can't use your connection.

Extend your coverage

  1. Add a mesh system or Wi-Fi extender for large homes or multiple floors. For devices like a TV or gaming console, a wired Ethernet cable is usually fastest.

When to call your provider

If speeds are slow even right next to the router after restarting it, contact your internet provider. There may be a line fault, or your router may need replacing.
