Coming home from a trip to a massive phone bill is a horrible surprise. A little preparation keeps you connected without overspending.

Step 1: Check your current plan

Before you leave, check what your mobile provider charges in your destination. Some plans include roaming in certain countries; others charge daily fees or high prices per megabyte.

Step 2: Pick the best option

Option Best for
Roaming bundle from your provider Short trips, keeping your own number easily
Travel eSIM Compatible phones; buy data before you go
Local SIM card Longer stays and heavy data use
Wi-Fi only Light users who mainly need maps and messages
Check firsteSIMs and local SIMs only work if your phone is unlocked and supports them. Check your phone settings or ask your provider.

Step 3: Reduce data use

  • Download offline maps before you travel.
  • Download music, podcasts and films at home.
  • Turn off automatic app updates and photo backups on mobile data.
  • Use Wi-Fi at your hotel, cafés and airports when possible.

Step 4: Avoid accidental charges

If you're not using a travel plan, turn off data roaming in your settings until you need it. Watch out on ferries and cruise ships, where phones can connect to expensive satellite networks.

Stay safe on public Wi-Fi

Avoid logging into banking apps on open public Wi-Fi. Use mobile data for sensitive tasks, or a reputable VPN.

With the right setup, you can share photos, use maps and stay in touch — and come home to a normal bill.
