Watching the luggage carousel stop with no sign of your bag is stressful. Most delayed bags are found and returned within a few days, but acting quickly makes the process much smoother.

At the airport

  1. Don't leave the baggage hall. Go straight to your airline's baggage service desk.
  2. File a report. You'll usually be given a Property Irregularity Report (PIR) with a reference number. Keep it safe.
  3. Describe your bag in detail: colour, brand, size and any tags or ribbons.
  4. Give a delivery address and phone number where you'll be staying.
Pro tipTake a photo of your suitcase and its contents before every trip. It makes reports and claims much easier.

While you wait

Ask the airline what essentials they'll cover, such as toiletries or a change of clothes. Keep every receipt, as you may be able to claim these costs back.

Track your bag using the reference number on the airline's website or app.

Making a claim

Deadlines matter. Under international rules that apply to many flights, you generally need to send a written claim within 21 days of receiving a delayed bag, and within 7 days for damaged baggage. Check your airline's rules, as they may differ.

  • Submit your claim in writing with your PIR number.
  • Include receipts and any photos.
  • Keep copies of everything you send.

Check your travel insurance

Many travel insurance policies cover delayed or lost baggage, sometimes in addition to what the airline pays. Some credit cards include travel cover too.

Prevent it next time

  • Remove old luggage tags from previous flights.
  • Put your name and contact details inside and outside your bag.
  • Pack medication, valuables and a change of clothes in your hand luggage.
  • Consider a small Bluetooth tracker in your suitcase.
