What to Do on a Long Layover

Turn a long wait into a mini-trip or a restful break — inside or outside the airport.

A long layover can feel endless, but with a little planning it can be relaxing — or even a bonus city visit.

Can you leave the airport?

  • Check visa or entry requirements for that country.
  • Allow time for immigration, travel into the city and security on return.
  • Many travellers only leave with 6–8+ hours or more.
  • Check whether bags are checked through to your final destination.
Rule of thumbAim to be back at the airport at least 2–3 hours before your next flight, especially for international connections.

Inside the airport

  • Lounge: buy a day pass or use membership for food, showers and quiet.
  • Rest: some airports have sleep pods or quiet zones.
  • Explore: many airports have art, gardens or free tours.
  • Freshen up: look for showers.
  • Work or stream: find a charging point and free Wi-Fi.

Leaving the airport

Some airports offer free city tours for transit passengers. Otherwise, plan one or two nearby sights rather than trying to see everything.

Pack a layover kit

Toothbrush, change of top, charger, snacks and an eye mask make long waits much more comfortable.
