Dating can be confusing. Some dates go well and still lead nowhere; others feel awkward. A short reflection after each date helps you learn what you want — without changing who you are.

The 5-question post-date check-in

  1. How did I feel during the date? Relaxed, anxious, bored, excited?
  2. Did I share and ask questions in a balanced way?
  3. What did I learn about them — and do our values seem to match?
  4. Was I myself, or was I performing?
  5. Do I want to see them again? Why or why not?
Write it downNotes over several dates reveal patterns you'd otherwise miss, like always picking the same type of person.

Common things to adjust

  • Talking too much or too little: aim for a back-and-forth conversation.
  • Interview mode: swap rapid questions for stories and follow-ups.
  • Phone checking: put it away.
  • Negative topics too early: exes and complaints can wait.

Stay authentic

The goal isn't to become someone everyone likes. It's to show up as yourself, so the right people can recognise a good match.

Handling no second date

Rejection often has nothing to do with you — timing, chemistry and life circumstances all play a part. Take what's useful from your reflection and leave the rest.

If dating is affecting your self-esteem, take a break and focus on friends, hobbies and things that make you feel good.
