Dental disease is very common in dogs. Regular brushing helps keep teeth and gums healthy and reduces bad breath.

What you need

  • A dog toothbrush or finger brush
  • Dog toothpaste — never use human toothpaste, which can contain ingredients that are harmful to dogs
  • Treats for rewards

Step by step

  1. Start slowly. Let your dog lick a little toothpaste from your finger.
  2. Touch the mouth. Gently lift their lips and touch teeth and gums with your finger.
  3. Introduce the brush with toothpaste on it.
  4. Brush the outside surfaces using small circles, focusing on where teeth meet gums.
  5. Keep sessions short — 30 seconds at first, building up to a couple of minutes.
  6. Reward with praise and play.
RoutineDaily brushing is ideal. Even a few times a week is much better than none.

Extra help

Dental chews and toys can help, but they don't replace brushing.

See a vet if you notice

  • Very bad breath
  • Red, swollen or bleeding gums
  • Broken or loose teeth
  • Pawing at the mouth or difficulty eating

Your vet can check teeth during routine visits and recommend professional cleaning if needed.
