Accidents happen. A small first aid kit helps you handle minor problems and keep your pet comfortable on the way to the vet.

What to include

  • Your vet's number and the nearest emergency vet
  • Pet's medical records and medication list
  • Gauze, non-stick dressings and self-adhesive bandage
  • Blunt-ended scissors
  • Tweezers or a tick remover
  • Saline solution for rinsing wounds or eyes
  • Disposable gloves
  • A clean towel or blanket
  • A spare lead and collar
  • A muzzle that fits (injured pets may bite)
Ask your vetNever give human medicines to pets unless your vet tells you to. Some common painkillers are toxic to dogs and cats.

Basic tips

  • Stay calm and keep your pet still.
  • Apply gentle pressure to bleeding with clean gauze.
  • Call your vet for advice before travelling.

Learn the basics

Consider a pet first aid course. It builds confidence for emergencies. First aid is not a replacement for veterinary care.
