The right litter makes life easier for you and more comfortable for your cat. The wrong one can lead to smells, mess — or a cat that starts going elsewhere.

Types of cat litter

Type Pros Cons
Clumping clay Easy to scoop, widely liked by cats Heavy, can be dusty
Silica crystals Very absorbent, good odour control More expensive, some cats dislike the feel
Plant-based (wood, corn, tofu) Lightweight, often biodegradable Varies by brand; some track more
Recycled paper Soft, low dust, good for sensitive paws Less effective at hiding smells
Cat's choiceMany cats prefer fine, sandy, unscented litter. Strong perfumes can put them off using the box.

Setting up the litter box

  • Number of boxes: a common guideline is one per cat, plus one extra.
  • Size: big enough for your cat to turn around comfortably.
  • Location: quiet, easy to reach, and away from food and water bowls.
  • Depth: about 5–7 cm of litter for most cats.

Keep it clean

Scoop at least once a day and fully replace the litter and wash the box regularly with mild soap and water. Cats are clean animals and may avoid a dirty box.

Switching litter

Change gradually. Mix a little of the new litter into the old one, increasing the amount over a week or two.

When to see a vet

If your cat suddenly stops using the box, strains, or visits it much more often, contact a vet. Changes in litter habits can be a sign of a health problem.
