To a cat or dog, a Christmas tree is a giant new toy. A few simple precautions keep both your pet and your decorations safe.

Secure the tree

  • Use a sturdy, wide base.
  • Anchor tall trees to a wall or ceiling hook with clear fishing line.
  • Place the tree in a corner, away from furniture pets can jump from.

Decorate pet-safely

  1. Hang fragile and glass ornaments higher up.
  2. Use shatterproof decorations on lower branches.
  3. Skip tinsel — if swallowed, it can cause serious internal problems, especially for cats.
  4. Avoid edible decorations like chocolate or candy canes on the tree.
  5. Tuck light cables out of reach or use cord covers.

Watch out for plants

Some holiday plants can be harmful. Lilies are very dangerous for cats. Holly and mistletoe can also cause problems if eaten. Keep them out of reach or use artificial versions.

Train gently

Use a pet gate, or a citrus-scented spray around the base, which many cats dislike. Reward pets for ignoring the tree.

If your pet swallows something it shouldn't, contact your vet straight away.
