Colds and flu are both viral infections, and both are common in the colder months. They share some symptoms, but flu is usually more severe.

Typical differences

Cold Flu
Start Gradual Often sudden
Fever Rare or mild Common, can be high
Aches Mild Often strong body aches
Tiredness Mild Can be extreme
Runny or stuffy nose Very common Sometimes
Sneezing, sore throat Common Sometimes

Self-care for both

  • Rest and keep warm.
  • Drink plenty of fluids.
  • Over-the-counter remedies can ease symptoms — follow the label or ask a pharmacist.
  • Stay home to avoid spreading it.
PreventionWash hands often, cover coughs and sneezes, and ask about the annual flu vaccine if you're eligible.

When to get medical help

Contact a doctor if symptoms are severe, last longer than expected, or get worse after improving. Seek urgent help for difficulty breathing, chest pain, confusion, or signs of dehydration. Older adults, pregnant people, young children and people with long-term conditions should be especially careful.
