When introduced kindly, a crate becomes a safe space your puppy enjoys. It can help with house training and keep your puppy safe when you can't supervise.

Choose the right crate

Your puppy should be able to stand up, turn around and lie down comfortably. Many crates come with dividers so you can adjust the space as they grow.

Make it cosy

  • Add soft bedding and a safe chew toy.
  • Place the crate in a room where the family spends time.
  • Cover part of it with a blanket for a den-like feel.

Training steps

  1. Leave the door open and let your puppy explore. Toss treats inside.
  2. Feed meals near, then inside, the crate.
  3. Close the door for a few seconds while they eat, then open it.
  4. Gradually increase the time, staying nearby.
  5. Practise short absences from the room.
Golden ruleNever use the crate as punishment. It should always be a positive place.

How long is OK?

Puppies can't hold their bladder for long. Take them out regularly, including after waking, eating and playing. Avoid leaving a puppy crated for long periods.

Whining

Make sure they don't need the toilet. Otherwise, wait for a quiet moment before letting them out, so they learn that calm behaviour opens the door.
