Every relationship has topics that feel hard to bring up: money, chores, intimacy, family, the future. Avoiding them usually makes things worse. A little structure helps.

Before you talk

  • Get clear on what you want to say and what you'd like to change.
  • Choose a time when you're both calm and not tired or rushed.
  • Ask: "Is now a good time to talk about something important?"

A simple structure

  1. Start gently: "I'd like to talk about something that's been on my mind."
  2. Describe the situation: specific, without blame.
  3. Share your feeling: "I feel..."
  4. Say what you need: a clear request.
  5. Listen: ask how they see it.
Example"When plans change at the last minute, I feel stressed. Could we agree to check with each other first?"

During the conversation

  • Avoid "always" and "never".
  • Reflect back what you hear: "So you're saying..."
  • Take a break if voices rise, and agree to come back to it.

Afterwards

Thank your partner for talking. Follow up later to see how agreed changes are working.

If the same conflicts keep repeating, couples counselling can help you both feel heard.
