Taking your pet on a trip can be wonderful, but it needs careful planning. Rules, comfort and safety all matter.

Before you book

  • Check pet-friendly accommodation in advance.
  • For flights, read the airline's pet policy — rules on size, carriers and cabin travel vary.
  • For international travel, check entry rules: microchips, vaccinations and health certificates are often required.

Visit your vet

Book a check-up before the trip. Ask about travel sickness, anxiety and any documents you need.

Car travel

  1. Use a secure crate or pet seatbelt harness.
  2. Take breaks every 2–3 hours for water and toilet stops.
  3. Never leave a pet alone in a parked car — it can get dangerously hot or cold.
  4. Feed a light meal a few hours before setting off.
Practice runsGet your pet used to the carrier or car with short, positive trips before the big journey.

Pack for your pet

  • Food, bowls and water
  • Lead, harness and ID tag with your phone number
  • Bedding and a favourite toy
  • Waste bags or litter
  • Medication and vet records

If your pet gets very stressed travelling, a trusted pet sitter or boarding may be the kinder option.
