Cats spend more time indoors in winter, and boredom can lead to overeating, scratching or restlessness. Enrichment keeps them happy and healthy.

Daily play

  • Two or three short play sessions with wand toys
  • Let them "catch" the toy at the end to finish the hunt
  • Rotate toys so they feel new

Food puzzles

Puzzle feeders and treat balls make cats work for food, like hunting. Start easy and increase difficulty.

Climbing and watching

  • Cat trees and wall shelves
  • A window perch to watch birds
  • A bird feeder outside the window
Cardboard magicBoxes and paper bags (handles removed) are free, exciting hiding spots.

Cosy spots

Provide warm beds away from draughts, and a few hiding places around the house.

New experiences

  • Cat-safe grass to nibble
  • Scent games with catnip or silvervine
  • Short training sessions with treats

Sudden changes in appetite, energy or behaviour can signal health problems — check with your vet.
