Fireworks can be frightening for many dogs. The sudden noise and flashes may cause shaking, hiding, barking or trying to escape. With some preparation, you can help your dog feel much safer.

Before the fireworks

  • Walk your dog earlier in the day, while it's still light and quiet.
  • Check their microchip details and ID tag are up to date in case they bolt.
  • Secure doors, windows and gates.
  • Feed dinner a little earlier so they're settled before the noise starts.

Create a safe den

Set up a cosy hiding spot in a quiet room: a crate covered with a blanket, or a corner with their bed, favourite toys and some of your clothing that smells familiar.

Pro tipClose curtains to block flashes, and play the TV, radio or calm music to mask the bangs.

During the fireworks

  1. Stay home with your dog if you can.
  2. Act calm and normal — dogs pick up on your mood.
  3. Let them hide if they want to. Don't force them out.
  4. Offer comfort if they come to you; it's okay to reassure a scared dog.
  5. Never punish fearful behaviour.
  6. Keep them on a lead in the garden for toilet breaks.

Long-term help

Some dogs benefit from gradually getting used to firework sounds through gentle sound training over weeks or months, starting at a very low volume.

Talk to your vet

If your dog is extremely frightened every year, speak to your vet well before fireworks season. They can suggest calming products, behaviour support or, in some cases, medication.
