Kittens usually take to a litter box quickly because they naturally want to dig and bury. A good setup does most of the work.

Set up the box

  • Choose a box with low sides that a kitten can easily climb into.
  • Use unscented, kitten-safe litter.
  • Place it in a quiet, easy-to-reach spot, away from food and water.
  • In a large home, put more than one box.

Training steps

  1. Show your kitten the box as soon as they arrive.
  2. Place them in the box after meals, after naps and after play.
  3. Let them sniff and dig — gently scratching the litter with your finger can encourage them.
  4. Praise calmly when they use it.
  5. Keep their space small at first, so the box is always nearby.
Never punishAccidents happen. Clean them with an enzyme cleaner to remove the smell, and never scold — it makes kittens anxious.

Keep it clean

Scoop the box at least once a day and change the litter regularly. Kittens may avoid a dirty box.

When to see a vet

If your kitten keeps going outside the box, strains or has diarrhoea, see a vet to rule out health problems.
