How to Build a Morning Routine That Actually Sticks

Forget 5 a.m. wake-ups and hour-long rituals. A short, realistic routine is the one you'll keep.

A good morning routine can make the rest of your day feel calmer and more focused. But many routines fail because they're too long or too ambitious.

The best routine is the one you'll actually do on a busy Tuesday. Start small and build from there.

Start the night before

Mornings go more smoothly when you prepare in the evening:

  • Lay out clothes and pack your bag.
  • Prepare breakfast or lunch if you can.
  • Go to bed at a regular time so waking up is easier.

A simple 20-minute routine

  1. Wake up at the same time every day and avoid hitting snooze.
  2. Drink a glass of water as soon as you're up.
  3. Get some daylight — open the curtains or step outside for a few minutes.
  4. Move for 5 minutes — a short stretch or quick walk.
  5. Eat a simple breakfast.
  6. Plan your top three tasks for the day.
Pro tipKeep your phone away for the first 15–30 minutes. Starting the day with messages and news puts you in reactive mode.

Use habit stacking

Attach a new habit to something you already do. For example: "After I switch on the kettle, I'll do five stretches." Linking habits makes them much easier to remember.

Expect imperfect days

You'll miss days — everyone does. Missing once doesn't matter; just pick it up again the next morning. Consistency over weeks is what counts.

Once your short routine feels automatic, you can add something new, like reading for ten minutes or journalling.
