A new baby is a big change for an older child. With preparation and reassurance, most children adjust well and grow to love their new role.

Before the baby arrives

  • Tell your child in simple words, at an age-appropriate time.
  • Read picture books about new siblings.
  • Let them help choose baby items or decorate the nursery.
  • Make any big changes (new bed, starting nursery) well before the birth.

Bringing the baby home

  1. Let your child meet the baby when you can give them full attention.
  2. Consider a small gift "from the baby".
  3. Encourage gentle touching and helping.
  4. Praise them for being kind.
One-to-one timeEven 10 minutes a day of special time with your older child, without the baby, makes a big difference.

Expect some regression

It's common for older children to act younger for a while — wanting a bottle, toilet accidents, or more clinginess. Stay calm and reassuring; it usually passes.

Let them help

Give simple jobs like fetching a nappy or choosing the baby's outfit. Feeling useful helps them feel important.

Talk about feelings

It's okay for your child to feel jealous or upset. Let them say how they feel, and remind them that your love for them hasn't changed.
