Cold winds, low humidity and indoor heating all pull moisture from your skin. The result: tight, flaky, itchy skin. A few simple changes help a lot.

In the shower

  • Use warm, not hot, water.
  • Keep showers short.
  • Use a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser instead of harsh soap.
  • Pat skin dry rather than rubbing.

Moisturise smartly

  1. Apply moisturiser within a few minutes of washing, while skin is still slightly damp.
  2. Choose thicker creams or ointments in winter.
  3. Look for ingredients like glycerin, ceramides or petrolatum.
  4. Don't forget hands, elbows, knees and feet.
Overnight hand fixApply a thick layer of hand cream at bedtime and wear cotton gloves overnight.

Protect your skin outdoors

  • Wear gloves and a scarf in cold wind.
  • Use lip balm.
  • Sunscreen still matters in winter, especially in snow.

At home

A humidifier adds moisture back into dry indoor air, especially in bedrooms.

When to see a doctor

If skin is cracked, bleeding, very itchy or doesn't improve, see a doctor or pharmacist. Conditions like eczema may need specific treatment.
